Do i need to do re calibrations of the compass and/or IMU after the new firmware update? Or should i only worry about it if it tells me to?

I always do too, however a lot on this forum questioned me today about it.

I recalibrate mine mid flight always. Can never be too careful!!!

I flew out over a mile out over the bay today and did not do any calibrations after the firmware update I downloaded yesterday. Flew like a champ. I don't do calibrations unless I am directed to. Haven't done a single one since I opened up the box three weeks ago. NOW, my old MA1 was ALWAYS TELLING ME TO CALIBRATE.

for me the most important point ,when doing app ,or firmware updates is after the update has finished to go into the app and check out the settings for things like RTH max height max distance, settings for obstacle avoidance etc as these can sometimes be altered during updates ,i have never done any IMU or compass calibrations following an update

{what he said} never trust an app to keep your settings between updates.

Can someone explain why they think it necessary to do the calibrations after a FW update? It’s not a DJI documented requirement
I’ll tell you why I do it. With the P2’s way back in phantom pilots it was just a givin to do it. We would even do cold
ones in the hotter months. I know doing the cold ones helped on start ups when it was hot. It also assured if there
was a issue we knew it wasn’t the IMU so we looked elsewhere. These are different now and might never need to
be recalibrated but it doesn’t hurt if done properly and does not take much time. It’s a habit that has stuck with me
so I do it. I can also say I never have any of the issues I read about in here. Can’t say that is why I havn’t but just saying.
Some never have any issues not doing them .?‍♂️

I performed update and flew with out any issues. If you’re moving to a new location, update or not, it’s not a bad idea to calibrate the compass. But, if you’re flying around your house and you’ve calibrated the compass already, I don’t see any reason at all to recalibrate after a firmware update.

@sar104 would you like to comment on the likelyhood that a FW update could cause a compass calibration to be needed?

If the FW update reset or altered the compass calibration values then that would be the case. FW updates don't usually do that though.

Hello,

I have never recalibrated after many updates, Mavic Air1, a drone that often needs compass calibration !
Mavic Air 2 : I did not recalibrate with DjiFly 1.1.2, 1.1.4 and 1.1.5, and the new firmware.

0 problem.

Of course, recalibrating cannot hurt, compass calibration is fast.
Of course, if Dji fly asks for a calibration, I will perform it.

I consider it would be written in the Dji manual if a little bit important !

By the way, I always perform any firmware update with Dji Assistant 2, never with DjiFly - Dji Fly is not a bad choice as Dji mentions both methods in their manuals.

How does one calibrate the compass mid-flight? I have read about doing figure eights, but would not know how. In any event, the instructions say to rotate it horizontal and then rotate vertical. That is not possible mid-flight.
