What would happen if somebody in the U.S. had a 249-gram drone and wanted to attach a small accessory that would add a couple of grams? Technically, a drone over 249g is supposed to get registered. What if they didn't register it? Is there a Drone Police that drives around with a gram scale in their trunk who would write you up a ticket on the spot? Would you get fined for every gram over 249? ?

DJI sell you the Mavic mini fly more combo with propeller guards and this make the mini over 249g and still they advertise does not need to be register. The caching part is they should say "as long as you do not use the propeller guards".

Is my understanding by FAA rules that needs to be register if the drone at the moment of take off weights more than 249g period.

I understand that. But what if one added something, ie: the propeller guards, what would happen to them? Who would know besides the person flying it?

Easiest path is to just register with the FAA. $5 and you are good to go. You're registration number, for recreational pilots, is the same for any drone you fly that requires one.

Suppose I register my drone, get a registration number and then crash the drone. Can I transfer the same number to a new drone without paying another $5?

In Italy they say below 250 no need to register ONLY IF WITHOUT a camera.
I think they made this just for the Mini

If it's over 250g it's over 250g. Get the wrong judge or wrong "Drone Police" on the wrong day and it's still over 250g

In the US if flying for recreation the operator is registered and his/her registration number has to be on any aircraft they fly that is between 250 grams and 55lbs so your number will be the same no matter how many aircraft you have. $5 every once every (4 years? I forget) and that’s it.

Its only if you fly for other purposes besides recreation that you have to register each individual drone and in that case you have to register all drones less than 55 lbs including the mavic mini anyway.

The Mavic Mini doesn’t get you much here in the US as far as regulations. It’s in places like Canada that it can make a huge difference.

As recreational you pay only $5 and print the same number to all your drones, so your mini is cover is you have more drones like me, but you need to put the sticker on the drone.

Probably nobody will know the drone is over 250g.
I am talking for myself, is like been in a rural road in a sport car where the speed limit is 55 mph and there is no police around. Will you go over 55 mph? i am not in purpose. Is up to you.

As already said the registration number is for YOU...not the aircraft...you put your FAA number on ALL your aircraft for the time period that you paid your $5 (3 years)....And no there isn't the "Drone" police out there. But just to be safe, when you fly it over the 250 gram to save $5....make sure you hit something really hard so that it shatters in a bazillion pieces, So they won't find it all and your under weight.;)

Awesome question .
I stick to all the rules and regulations as much as I can .
But I have read many posts on the forum about mini’s mostly and extra bells and whistles being added to them .
Eg some of the skins can put you over the 250 limit or prop covers , landing gear etc .
I’m going out on a limb here but does the average cop know the difference between 249 and 252 g , I really don’t think so .. I mean is there a tolerance factor like every other piece of engineering out in the world .

I have to agree with you 99,89726 % !!.

Also what real trouble can a gram here or there make if you get involved in a collision with something??.

So I don’t believe it’s a safety issue in any way .

I’m not exactly sure why we drone flying people ,self included get so intricately involved in all of the regulations right down to a gram .

So like I said before I totally agree with all the rules and regulations and I try to understand and follow them ,
But I fly because it’s totally awesome, it’s fantastic hobby but a gram here or there isn’t going to stop me flying .
Many of us are hobby people,so relax a little and , make sure you’re having fun !!!

These are my personal thoughts .

It literally costs $5 for an unlimited number of drones between 250 grams and 55 lbs to comply with the law so how anyone could come to the conclusion to not do that makes absolutely no sense.

I realize it’s different in Canada but here in the US it’s $5 and not worth the brain cells used to make the decision

Are you implying that brain cells are required for this hobby??? I got about a million Youtube videos I could link you to that prove otherwise ;)

I guess $5 dollars is more than reasonable for all the drones. We pay much more for accessories, skins and other stuff.

My local RC club membership is $100 and the AMA $75 a year.

come on now guys lets not let this thread become a slanging match, about rules and regs
as regards to registering the MM its up to the individual to decide if they register or not ,
but if they dont and the drone is involved in an accident ,and then found to be over the weight threshold ,then they could end up with a large fine or worse
my view is its not worth the agro ,so i would just register, but that is just my opinion

Yup, $5 will keep you out of troubles!

I’m seriously bemused here! You pay at least $400 for your drone and then argue about paying an extra $5 to guarantee it’s always legal - really?
I concur with that, but you also have the "theorist" who deem that list is big brother and that their top secret alter ego persona may be exposed  ...so yeah you have that. Not to mind that Full sized aircraft are publicly listed, as are 107 pilots...but hobbiest data base is not (At present AFAIK)

No one. Absolutely nothing would happen.
Sorry it took so long to answer your question

It actually is a media and gobernments :)p) overstepping...I mean how many of us "pilots" who have been flying multiple of these aircraft's over "X" amount of years (Hundreds of flight hours) have ever encountered anyone with any authority who have requested that you show that you are even registered with the FAA?

I had one (1), number before two ;) occasion where a off duty officer asked me while I was onsite photographing a business where he was visiting something. He and a few others where outside on a patio and waited until I landed. He approached and asked the usual questions (How Much, How Far, How Fast...ect) then inquired with a question as "these things have to be registered now, right?" This was way back when this started (First go around), but a few months after implementation. So even he just had hearsay or limited knowledge...since then NADA, from anyone who would matter.

I actually pulled all my stickers when it got overturned, and some BOZO (Civilian, know it all) did ask to see my FAA credentials. I told him politely that it wasn't required anymore and that it had been overturned, he argued, I told him to google it. He went off for a second to his phone and found out I was correct..and went off in a huff :)
