Was out flying an hour ago, and didn’t see this. Popped open the Fly app just now, and here it is...

Overview:
  • Date: 2020.08.10
  • Aircraft Firmware: v01.00.0340
  • Remote Controller: v01.00.0340
  • DJI Fly App iOS: v1.1.6
  • DJI Fly App Android: v1.1.6

What’s New?
  • Added Safety Flight Mode. The aircraft avoids obstacles automatically and will not respond to commands to fly left or right.
  • Added 4K Zoom Mode, which supports 2x digital zoom when set to 4K 30/25/24 fps.
  • Added 2x digital zoom when set to 2.7K 60/50/48/30/25/24 and 4x digital zoom when set to 1080P 60/50/48/30/25/24 in video mode.
  • Added 4K resolution in Hyperlapse.
  • Optimized FPV mode for gimbal.
  • Optimized shooting performance when flying forward in Sport mode. Adjust the flight attitude to avoid propellers unexpectedly showing up in the camera view.
  • Optimized Hyperlapse. Added ability to pause shooting during Hyperlapse, increased the number of waypoints to 45, and added support for Task Library.
  • Optimized ActiveTrack when tracking vehicles at low altitude.

What exactly is updating batteries? Do you mean charging batteries?
No, it means updating the FW in each battery. Sometimes the drone’s FW update goes hand in hand with a battery FW update, you need to do the all your batteries, not just the one used to update the drone.

edit: I can confirm that there is a battery FW update as well

I did the update with 1 battery and all good. Then after just reading your post plugged in my other 2. I didn't notice any "updating" going on.

So to everyone reading the "update your batteries too" message. That's looked after, no need to stress(to me it seems nothing is happening but I'm too new to know for sure, for all I know there could be a small piece of code sitting on the drone that does the updating and then again it might not update either.

But in a nutshell, you only need to update the drone, the batteries are taken care of as part of the process as it should be.

Incorrect. The battery used during the drone firmware update is the only one that's updated automatically. The others will have to be done manually. There will be a notification in the Fly app to update the battery, in the first window when you launch the app. This is old information by the ways, this is how the battery updates has always been from day one.

I just used the “non updated” batteries and had no message. They just worked with absolutely no intervention. Maybe they are being updated by the drone itself.

just my experience as a newer dji drone user.

The batteries will still work if not updated.

No, the drone doesn't just 'update' the batteries on its own; it doesn't work that way.

The notification will be on the initial screen, it may take a few minutes to register the required update.

I had to trick my update.
I posted my steps in the update section.

I do not believe this is correct. When you update the drone's firmware, it seems to update the firmware in the battery that's in the drone at that moment (and the controller also).

But!: If you then swap the other batteries into the drone, they will request a firmware update before they can be used. Better to run through all your batteries at home and update them than to discover this out in the field.

I just went through this process this morning.
